Well, here we are, rapidly approaching 20 years since the day that OJ
Simpson went from being one of America's most beloved (albeit well less than
A-list by that time) celebrities to being America's all-time favorite double
murderer. Granted, it took a while before we realized that he did in fact do
the deed, but his actions on June 12, 1994 cemented his place in both infamy
and pop culture.

Last night while flipping through the channels I had occasion to see Geraldo
Rivera presenting his retrospective, "Geraldo Rivera: O.J. Simpson at 20."
Geraldo hit the highlights - the murders, the Bronco chase, the Dream team,
Mark Fuhrman, the glove demonstration, Alan Dershowitz, the verdict, the
civil trial, Las Vegas, nullification and the racial divide both caused, and
exacerbated, by the players in this case. It wasn't particularly meaty given
that it was only an hour in length but it did manage to evoke some of the
atmosphere of the time.

I don't know how many more of these retrospectives there will be - most of
America has moved on, particularly since the trial and verdict in Las Vegas.
OJ is in prison now, if neither in the correct jurisdiction nor for the
correct e. nvfgrimre. He is there lawfully, of course, but had justice been
served on October 3, 1995 OJ would never have been available to attempt to
'reclaim' memorabilia that had been 'stolen' from him in the wake of a civil
trial that would never have occurred. Perhaps Las Vegas was payback for
Brentwood, perhaps not. Threatening people with guns is frowned upon pretty
much everywhere in the US regardless of one's past history.

We haven't discussed the case here in a very long time - sadly, the very
openness that made Usenet such a powerful medium for disseminating
information led to its demise in a sea of unmoderated spam. If the truth be
told, in this group I think John Griffin grew weary of dealing with the
inanity of the Simpson apologists and dragged the soc.singles morons in here
simply to blow it up. Certainly that is the effect it had.

There still appears to be some discussion, if it can be dignified with that
term, going on here: http://www.smartfellowspress.com/0514_toc.htm

Be forewarned - this is a site dedicated to the utterly insane proposition
that Mark Fuhrman committed these murders. It is basically a
self-congratulatory circle jerk of pro-js weaving theories so batsh*t crazy
that even Prien would be embarrassed, though of course he does make
appearances there.

As to this group, a lot of great discussion and debate was had here.
Hopefully all who were involved are happy and healthy, though we know that
at least a few have shuffled off this mortal coil. RIP Dick, Betty, and any
others who are no longer with us.

Perhaps there is more to come. Stay tuned.....
