The religious question

The only religious question worth asking is, Will the world end in our lifetime?

If it will end, we should bet on doing what's necessary to enter God's kingdom.

If it will not end, we should bet on improving life for people around the globe.

There are no other questions worth asking.

That's easy. Be a good little pet and be very careful not to go on the
rug. God doesn't just whack his pets with a rolled up paper once - he
whacks them for eternity.

I'm still waiting for all these religious folks to come over and
improve my life.

Really? How about: "Is there really any sense in religion?"

It hasn't ended in anyone elses lifetime, so the safe bet would be No.

If the world does end, does that necessarily mean God's Kingdom exists?

I have a hard enough time improving my own.

And even that one is not worth asking. But it is surprising how often it
DOES appear to be asked, with the implication that a belief in End Times
coming soon absolves a believer of responsibility of doing anything about
the 'here and now'. End Times believers often spend so much of their
time gazing expectantly into the sky that they fail to notice most of the
things going on here on Earth.

It does not matter whether you expect your Earthly life to run its course
before the Second Coming or not - you can still work to improve life for
people around the globe. Dedication to God is not simply a case of doing
all the right things until He lets you in. It is what is in your heart
that counts. Maybe working to improve life for others - and doing it
because you believe in it - IS what will get you into God's kingdom.

"Bet"? Sounds kind of like Pascal's Wager. No winning gamble there...

Anyway, Krishnamurti was once asked if he believed in a creator.
He replied that he thought that it was irrelevant, because whether
or not a creator existed, it wouldn't affect how he knew he was
supposed to _behave_.

Mediocrity is woven like a golden thread through everything we do. Society
demands it as a sacrifice to the god of normalcy. And I can be as shallow as
anyone else when the occasion serves. Commercial culture breeds a species of
shallow being and rebellions against the norm occur when the agents and ad men
nod their heads.

It depends on how you measure it. Can you imagine either you or Ilya
trying to be average?

Imagine Ilya drinking Schlitz and discussing football scores. Imagine
him trying to make small talk with women about the latest sitcoms.
Working data-entry and spending his paycheck at Sears.

You're the same way, in a different kind of way. If you tried to be
average all it would take would be some guy explaining how we had to go
into iraq because of 9/11 and the WMDs and you couldn't keep it up ten
seconds.

Please don't say that around Karl, Sven, Ivar, and the kin...they are sensitive
about their wittle team.

I wasn't going to mention this, but due to a four year residence in the Bay
Area, and numerous free tickets, my second favorite team is the Raiders. (This
is something I cannot confess back home in Minnie-sota.) But I wear two hats. I
almost started dating one of them. (But he was such an arrogant asshole!)

The team everyone roots for around here (current residence) is a college team.

There's a big college team rivalry thing here in Florida.

Just to see Ilya riding around in the nude on a unicycle?

...and how long does that last, one minute, two, five if its a real good
day? About as long as it takes for a player to get over a touch down
or stopped play that he was the primary reason for its success. Hal
made them pray. Pray that it was over. Pray he would retire. Pray
that the "weathered heath" would no longer meet his face. "Glory,
hallelujah! Thank the Lord they don't let dogs doo doo on this heath,
whether one brings lox and champagne or not." The player abstained
overnight. It was simpler without tresses in the sky, or so he thought.
Weekends are for wusses. The player works on Sundays, and he was dear
to no one, nor no one dear to him. Sun-days. It doesn't fade so
quickly, really; he gave it life every time he spoke about it, even
though it was only to himself.

If a player abstains from sex prior to
praying; does his god hear him better.
If the player is Nordic does it help him
to win or lose? The player needs to know
if he is praying for the right thing.
Abstinence is one of the few things that

that it does much worse than that. This,

I admire that sort of thing. My sister had a nice bunch of tools when
she was married to her second husband. She was fairly skilled also.

It took getting involved with youth sports for me to get interested in
adult sports. I hope to go to a Bucs game this year. If I get the job

Perhaps hosed on isn't the best word. I was goofing on whoever that
guy was ... John Latter, that's it .. and you rushed in with whatever
comment it was ... something about me not paying attention to what he
was referring to ... that was hosing ... your intention was to pick
pick pick not anything more elevated.

Anyway, you tried to stem the flow or some such (heh - you attempted
to help me see things in a different light - the light of moronic

The dynamic is pretty obvious to me. Deny it all you'd like but we

least I'm honest about it. You pretend to take the high ground whilst
you play in the same gutter as those you pretend to be above.

I've wondered why manipulation is a dirty word. What else do people do?

I've gotten the impression they consider it wrong to manipulate *other
people* even though it's fine to manipulate everything else, apparently
the idea is that we should tell other people just what we want them to
do and then bargain or something. I'm not sure what that's all about.

Anyway, no, I'm not much like you or your father. When I was young I
didn't have a lot of interest in or contact with human beings, and then
when I did get interested they seemed very peculiar. It hasn't been a
survival issue to get people to do what I want, and also I've learned
compassion and so I tend not to do things that might damage them so that
I can find out how they deal with it.

The only religious question worth asking is, Will the world end in our lifetime?
If it will end, we should bet on doing what's necessary to enter God's kingdom.
Heh.. That is how I feel about an afterlife. If there is one then I am
living with regards to that end.
If not then I really have nothing to lose.

Red tides are a natural phenomenon. But the sea is being raped on an
unprecedented industrial scale. It is being "clear cut", "strip mined".
Maybe nothing can be done. Maybe we are, on a planetary scale, nothing more
significant than an insideous virus.

How are you going to stop the greed and madness without draconian restrictions?
How are you going to reason with the unreasoning? How are you going to tell them
that wanting everything under the sun is a sickness?

The only religious question worth asking is, Will the world end in our lifetime?
If it will end, we should bet on doing what's necessary to enter God's kingdom.
If it will not end, we should bet on improving life for people around the globe.
There are no other questions worth asking.

Ilya goes out on a limb - and dances.
He takes intellectual chances. He plays with ideas and words and is sometimes
brilliant and sometimes as silly as a teenager. And he can often be pedantic.

This seems to infuriate some people. Out there on that limb, dancing, Ilya's
vulnerable to rocks and sticks, thrown by people whose feet often seem ancored
in mud.

He reminds me of a court jester in-training. Full of wisdom and silliness. Too
unorthodox to be admitted into the convention of bishops.

Yes. We have to be careful not to give him too much encouragement or it

I hear you. I think that if something bugs me about
someone else, it says something about me. In the sense
that I am a reflection of others and what I see in them
somehow reflects something about how I see myself.

In Ilya's case, perhaps (just perhaps, I'm not saying it
*is* so) his attackers resent his ability to go on posting
regardless - they wish they could be as free.

It takes courage to "go within" and challenge one's own
reactions/thoughts, so I'm not hoping for any miracles here.

And if it bugs me that Ilya bugs them then that's *my*
problem.

I'm not sure I have that kind of patience. If a person, on-line or off, gets

be teased and others are not.

I consider a certain persistent and unsolicited type of relentless flamewaring
to be both a form of perverse net stalking and a sign that the attackers have
way too much unstructured time on their hands. Or, at the very least, they are
guilty of infecting others with their on-going depression.

I am quite able to create my own depressions - thank you!

Ilya just throws stuff out there so he can get some feetback. He's using this
medium to express and educate himself.

Not as a punching bag.

I'm a fucking mess.
I'm sorry to hear that bob. I hope things turn around for you soon.
It's not that bad. I shouldn't have brought it up. I was feeling like
shit when I wrote the post. My weakness. I won't let it happen again.
A thousand pardons.
Be not concerned my dear! I often hear various economists (who are employed)
talking about "normal" market fluctuations and it's concommitant unemployment
surges in rarified and abstract terms and I have to fight back an overwhelming
urge to throw a brick at them.
I'm doing my own version of the rebound blues. My solution is to lean
emotionally on my close friends (and why not - they've certainly leaned on me
enough) and to bury myself in my work. I'm also about to reconfigure my work
schedule and restructure my hours. New projects are a great way to occupy the
mind.
Sounds good. I'm unemployed and am a hermit. I'll have to come up with
another plan!
Last weekend a group of chummies came out for a sleep-over and I don't know what
I would do without them. My most immediate problem is to cut down on my
drinking, which has spiked on the charts in the last three weeks. Not good. So
starting today, I'm on a new regimen.

That's good. I'm generally pretty good about it or at least I have
been for a while. This year has sort of sucked and I got into the bad
habit of drinking each night while reading. Besides being bad for my
mood and liver I managed to gain about 30 pounds. Three or four times
in the past two months I've drank enough that I felt like crap for
most of the next day. Two of those times were while I was visiting my
mother. Something about being in the house for the first time since my
father died and dealing with the fact that my mother's bf lived there
brought on a love affair with the bottle. Applying for food stamps
didn't do much for me last week.
I not forgive this administration for driving a strong economy into the dirt and
wasting so much human potential. I have been very bad about not
going home to see my folks. I feel a very strong need to go home this Christmas.

How old is your mother? (If you don't mind me asking?)
It must be stressful to be in your old house with her "boyfriend" there? I can't
even imagine my mother being with anyone but my father.
But no one's family is perfect. Certainly mine has its share of wackos.
Anyway.
I can't imagine having people over for the weekend. I get company
about twice a decade. One person at a time. This weekend, a friend of
my wife's is showing up with another woman for one night. I'll
probably take the kids to the beach to get out of the way.
The beach. I love isolated beaches. I can't stand crowded beaches. I'm quite
contented with calm mountain lakes. No sharks!
This weekend I'm turning off everything, including my cell-phone, and I'm going
off all electronics, except the stereo. I want to watch mars - the last
time it was this close was during the time of the neanderthals.
I'm supposed to get some work today but the douchebag, like usual, is
making it stressful for me. He's canceled a couple of times then he
said he'd stop over here instead. He wants to stand next to me while I
modify the product design. It'd make me feel like a trained seal.
Also, I'm really not interested in letting the guy in my house..
The only people I will see this weekend are the two guys that are bringing out a
cord of firewood. And they don't have much to say. I'm going for a
walk with my dog. Have a good weekend bob. Take care of yourself.

How much of the problem is due to the false ballooning (and subsequent
crash) of the stock market before this administration? How much is due
to the last Gulf War, the Reagan years, etc. Manufacturing jobs
started moving offshore en masse a generation ago. With the crash of
the overinflated stock market (the dot bomb) corporations started
looking for a new way to cut costs. I don't believe the blame is best
placed (or at least only placed) with the current administration. It's
a share thing. Government (past and present), corporations, and
investor expectations.

Yes. It's neat, isn't it? My cell phone is off most of the time. It's
strange that I do that because, other than my wife, it's very rare for
anyone to call me. Sometimes I get work related calls but only one
other person has ever called me on that number. I probably should turn
it on today. I might get a call for a job or something.

even imagine my mother being with anyone but my father.
But no one's family is perfect. Certainly mine has its share of wackos.
He's an OK guy. We don't have much in common but that isn't the issue.
It just feels strange, that's all. My mother seems to be the boss in
the house for the most part.
It's her house. It must be strange for her too.

I have to be connected most of the time. But I didn't want to talk to anyone
this weekend. I didn't feel like going to anyplace where I would have to
interact with anyone. Instead, I went hiking, swimming at the lake, listened to
music, and read. I also painted trim. It's sometimes very refreshing to
take a little mental hiatus.

I not forgive this administration for driving a strong economy into the dirt and
wasting so much human potential. I have been very bad about not
going home to see my folks. I feel a very strong need to go home this Christmas.
How much of the problem is due to the false ballooning (and subsequent
crash) of the stock market before this administration? How much is due
to the last Gulf War, the Reagan years, etc. Manufacturing jobs
started moving offshore en masse a generation ago. With the crash of
the overinflated stock market (the dot bomb) corporations started
looking for a new way to cut costs. I don't believe the blame is best
placed (or at least only placed) with the current administration. It's
a share thing. Government (past and present), corporations, and
investor expectations.
I'm sure a lot of it is - but I like blaming the Republicans anyway.
Blame Canada!

How old is your mother? (If you don't mind me asking?)
She's 66.
And she has a boyfriend? I can see why younger people who are widowed or
divorced would remarry.
But 66? But what do I know?
It's about companionship, I imagine. She's used to having someone else
around. She'll probably outlive me so I won't be surprised if she
finds someone else when this guy dies.

I don't think it is strange for her at all. I was surprised when she
bought an HDTV unit complete with a surround sound stereo system for
her winter place (40 minutes from here). I'm sure it was a toy for
him. It's good that she's enjoying herself.

I turned my phone on yesterday afternoon. It'd been off for a while. I
had a message waiting for me. Tomorrow I have a phone interview. My
second *hit* since April 2002.

Maybe something about Ilya bugs you?
If something about Ilya bugs you it seems to me it's you
who has the problem. Because Ilya keeps on posting regardless.
- Michaela
Ilya goes out on a limb - and dances.
He takes intellectual chances. He plays with ideas and words and is sometimes
brilliant and sometimes as silly as a teenager. And he can often be pedantic.
This seems to infuriate some people. Out there on that limb, dancing, Ilya's
vulnerable to rocks and sticks, thrown by people whose feet often seem ancored
in mud.
He reminds me of a court jester in-training. Full of wisdom and silliness. Too
unorthodox to be admitted into the convention of bishops.
In my mind I sometimes cast him as Konstantin Gavrilovich, the
young writer in "The Seagull". Almost everybody laughs at his
writing. And most directors make fun of it too. They feel on
Chekhov's side because Chekhov's style is a lot, sometimes even
verbatim, like Trigorin's, the successful, mature writer. -- I
tend to believe they are wrong, they underestimate Chekhov, his
ability to critisize himself, and the radicality of the
contradiction he wrote about. As spectator most of the time you
are "spared" of the real conflict, the drama, the comedy (and get
some "Russian" atmosphere instead).
Kostya insists on something that is not here. Not even in his
writing.
So, like Kostya, I prefer Ilya trying (and failing) at "new
forms" to Ilya going for some kind of yellow press classical
beauty.
There is no shortcut to Apollo. Most of the time the best one can
try is a hurt Dionysos.

Great analogy! I've read some Chekhov. But it's been years since I thought about
The Sea-Gull. Haven't really re-read any of him since under-grad work.

Yes, Ilya is stupid.

The only religious question worth asking is, Will the world end in our lifetime?
If it will end, we should bet on doing what's necessary to enter God's kingdom.
If it will not end, we should bet on improving life for people around the globe.
There are no other questions worth asking.
It's a worthless question, as we have no way to answer it.

What is necessary to enter God's kingdom, do you know? What that guy
on TV says, or which of the myriad of preachers am I to choose from?

What does it matter when the world ends, if God is pleased or not?
Now, five minutes from now, five millennia from now? Am I saved for a
few minutes, lost after that?

the only questions worth asking are the ones with a possibility of
answers, the rest are mental masturbation.
